有钱的富家女Sara Farley（Gene Tierney饰）一直被报纸编排中伤，某次在太阳谷偶然结识的年轻记者Thomas Jefferson Tyler（Tyrone Power饰）却想帮助Sara洗脱被报纸造谣的污名。善良的Sara十分感动却以报纸的销路为原因拒 绝了Thomas的请求，同时两人也开始暗生情愫。可是谁知道在报纸上写那些造谣文章的竟是Thomas本人，Thomas被揭露后心生不妙赶紧逃离了太阳谷，Sara知道后无比气愤。刚下飞机后Sara就被记者团团围住，Sara心生一计向记者透露她和Thomas已经结婚。可怜的Thomas一时间不仅成为了同行口中的笑柄，还要被报社老板开除。Thomas只能想尽各种办法来证明他们俩人并没有结婚，但人们都不相信。于是愤怒的Thomas就这场“假婚姻”开始和Sara斗智斗勇。
Plot Summary:An investigative reporter uses a ruse to meet Sara Farley, a grocery-store heiress he's been writing unflattering things about. He gets her to start talking about herself and finds her down-to-earth and engaging. Before he can publish an honest and admiring story, she finds out who he is, assumes he's going to write more lies, and sets out to undercut him by announcing to the press that the two of them are married. In trying to get the truth out, he loses his job, the two of them spend time in jail, and the stakes escalate. Finally, he sues her for libel, and a court tries to set things right.
